Sliding doors are a trend in 2022 homes and sliding glass doors are a great way to add more natural light into your home and make it feel more open. At Peak Windows, we manufacture our windows and doors in-house, allowing us to pass along the savings directly to our customers.
Our energy efficiency doors will not only decrease your energy costs, but your family will live in comfort all year long, as our insulated replacement windows and sliding glass doors reduce the effects of the elements, keeping your home warm all winter and cool all summer.
Like all parts of your home, sliding doors, especially glass, can experience some problems or damage. Here are 6 common issues that occur with sliding glass doors and how you or our professional team can handle them.
1-Bent Track
The track that your sliding doors run on is how it functions properly. If the metal track at the top or bottom of the sliding door is bent or broken, it may be hard to open or close the door.
If the track is bent inwards, you can use a strong pair of pliers to gently pull the section back out. For tracks that are bent outwards, use a small piece of wood and a rubber mallet. Place the piece of wood inside the track and tap the metal to bend it back to its original position. Be careful not to use too much force on either problem to prevent permanent damage.
2-Broken Panes
With all glass work, the biggest issue you can have is a broken pane. Not only is it a safety concern, but it can leave your home vulnerable to the elements and potential burglars.
It is best to have the glass replaced by a professional, so that it is sealed correctly and does not break again in the installation process. If not installed correctly, this could also be costly for having to replace the pane more than once as well, as if it is not sealed correctly, it lets hot or cold air into your home. However, you can start by removing the extra shards of glass that are still in the seal and from around the area of the door.
Our team at Peak Windows can install new glass in doors of all shapes and sizes, as well as exterior glass-like windows.
3-Damaged Wheels
If your track is damaged or your door has come off of the track, your wheels may be damaged and the screws that hold them in place may need to be tightened or replaced.
You can tighten the screw by turning it clockwise to raise the door and counterclockwise to lower the door. Make sure to adjust both sides for best results.
4-Compromised Locks
If you have an older sliding glass door, the locks may be simple and easy for someone to jimmy open. If you feel that your lock could use an upgrade, it is best to call the company that installed your doors for a recommendation. This ensures that your doors stay in good condition and have the proper locks installed.
5-Dirty Rollers
Rollers are what help your sliding glass door to actually slide. Dust and dirt can get caught in here and cause your doors to get stuck. You can vacuum out any major debris with a small attachment on your vacuum cleaner and also use a wet rag or paper towel to clean out the area more thoroughly.
6-Broken Or Bad Seal
If the seal to any door in your home is tattered or worn, you can feel a draft through your home or even see more small bugs in your home. Replacing the seal can be fairly easy. Remove the staples or glue from the door with a screwdriver and remove additional residue. Install a new weather strip as the instructions indicate, make sure to orient it correctly.
If you have any concerns about the seals and weather strips on your doors, you can call a window and door professional for tips on how to best secure it.
